Literacy and Culture in Science The idea of literacy can be very complex to wrap your mind around. What makes someone literate is a question that can have so many different answers. Part of what makes this so difficult to navigate is that there are many different types of literacy and literacy in each content area can vary quite a bit. Even within the content area of science there are multiple different ways literacy plays out. In science one of the most crucial examples of literacy is the understanding of the scientific method. It is important to know be literate with knowing how the scientific method works, knowing how to do the separate steps within the method, and then understanding it in order to do it by yourself. This leads into the need for the ability to follow lab protocols as these include steps on how to do a certain experiments. Often there are many sections in a lab protocol, so it is crucial to understand what each section is for and what you are supposed to do with each section of information. In many science content areas it is important to have a literacy in math especially with using formulas and conversions. These math concepts are important to doing science and understanding science.
