The case study shows that there are a few elements that hinder Kim’s reading ability. Since her father works in the building construction business she moved from school to school beginning at an early age. The foundation of learning to read stems from those early years. Another result of Kim moving from school to school is she has difficulty making positive connections to her school and teacher, which ties into her negative academic achievement. This also has an influence in building relationships with her peers. It was stated in the case study that Kim has lost the few friends she had and hasn’t received any birthday party invitations. Not only will it help their academic success but also promote positive relationships with peers. I would suggest to the parents that since Kim is a struggling reader, they are going to have to read books that interest her. It was stated in the case study that Kim enjoys playing the piano. I would advocate to the parents reading books with Kim that deal with music, especially the piano. Having her read books on her reading level will help her gain confidence in her reading ability. Then as she gains confidence and proficiency she can move up to more advanced books. Kim might feel disappointed that she is not at the same reading level as her peers. To make her feel more involved she should listen to audio tapped books that her classmates are reading. Her parents could also read and talk about the book to her. This will expose her to her grade level reading and make her feel like she isn’t left out. I would also suggest a specific time period during the day that Kim would read with her parents and a reward would be given to her at the end of each
