Imagine a world where the government controls all choices. The Dystopian novel The Giver, by Lois Lowry, is set in a future where everything is the same. They have the same houses, clothes, and the same birthday. They have no choices or feelings. The society from The Giver would be a negative change from the current society because it limits choices, eliminates feelings, and abolishes color.
In The Giver, the leaders of the society choose everything for the people. They choose their jobs, their spouses, and everything else. People need choice. Without choice, people won’t know how to function by themselves. In the community there is no love, individuality, or true happiness. Feelings and emotions make up a person. The people from The Giver have no feelings, making them have almost no personality. People without love aren’t humane. They have no regard for human life. People without individuality are part of a group and are the same as everyone else. People without true happiness live a life no one in the 2016 society would want to live. When Jonas learns about love, he thinks, “‘Love.’ It was a word and concept new to him. . . ‘I liked the feeling of love.’” Jonas likes it because he realizes that people need love.
Also, Jonas’s society doesn’t have color, and color is needed in many things such as, singularity. Jonas believes that, “‘It isn’t fair that nothing has color!’” (pg. 122) Jonas is right because without color, no one gets to choose anything, and as The Giver says, choosing is important. (pg. 98) Jonas is also right because without color, everyone is exactly the same. No one has a different skin color, no one gets new clothes, and no one has significantly different eye colors.
