The Evil Plot For the Wooden Leg I recently read the story “Good Country People” by Flannery O'Connor. This story is described as a southern gothic for its tone and very creepy ending. This story has a very twisted plot along with its very twisted ending. Flannery O'Connor does a good job setting up the characters in this story. At the end she twists them from who we thought they were. There are a few characters that we need to get to know before we analyze this text. First we have Mrs. Hopewell: a southern lady who was recently divorced and runs a farm by herself. Next we have Hulga: a 32 old woman who is the daughter of Mrs. Hopewell, Her real name is Joy which she changed legally to Hulga. She has a PhD in philosophy and is constantly mocked by her mother for it. She also has a wooden leg, which she lost when she was nine years old in a hunting accident. Next character we have is Mrs. Freeman: she has worked for Mrs. Hopewell on the farm the past four years. She is very mysterious and we don’t know much about Mrs. Freeman because the story is told through the eyes of Mrs. Hopewell and Hulga. She meets him and the two walk down through the pasture into a barn hayloft where he seduces her and steals her wooden leg and leaves her up there. Manley Pointer is seen leaving by Mrs. Freeman and the two lock eyes before disappearing under the hillside. I believe that Mrs. Freeman and Manley Pointer had an evil plan to steal her wooden leg all along. Manley Pointer goes around as a con artist and has already stole a girl's glass eye as
