The novel An American Marriage holds many influential characters with abundant traits. This book by Tayari Jones is about a young couple and the hardships they face. Roy has been wrongfully incarcerated while Celestial is trying to navigate her feelings for Roy and her best friend Andrea. Celestial is one of the main characters in An American Marriage, and the book follows her struggles with ending her relationship and the weight she is under with her husband in jail. Because of the stories and points of the book, it is implied that Celestial is very hardworking, independent, and even somewhat fortunate compared to those around her.

Celestial started her business herself and for many years ran it alone. Furthermore, she also was independent in her marriage. When Roy went off to prison, Celestial was able to take care of herself and found her own path after her husband was wrongly incarcerated. She often wanted to make her own decisions and not let anyone speak for her. In her vision board, her plans for the future included her life goals and aspirations for the career rather than a man. To her, a husband was just a perk of life rather than a necessity like Roy thought. She knew that she did not need a marriage in order to consider herself successful. In the brutal fight between Roy and Andre, Celestial was adamant that she would get her words in and would not be told what to do or where to go. When her parents did not approve of her relationship with Andre she did not let their opinions stop her happiness. When her college professor got her pregnant, she handled the situation herself which showed the great amounts of bravery she was taught to endure. Her business was self made and her career was created with only her help. Her mother’s teachings of always staying her ground and not letting a man push her around influenced Celestial’s independence as an adult. She had always told Celestial to keep her head up and not let men push her around. Seeing her father establish a name for himself by himself is implied to have influenced her motivation for starting her own business. His success inspired Celestial to chase after her
