After reading the invigorating and richly textured novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, it is evidently established that symbolism is dredged in depth throughout. Although most illustrations in fact are inferred, such symbols are somewhat apparent and exemplifying. For example, the knothole, or a hole in a piece of timber, is one of the key symbols in the novel because it constitutes a connection or relationship between Jem, Scout, and Boo. In the novel Boo distributes several relevant objects to Jem and Scout by placing them in the knothole, instead of verbally communicating. As everyone in the county believes Boo is actually insane and violent through passed down uncivil rumors.
In this story, the author uses symbolism to create a deeper thought. For example, the drumsticks that the drummer boy (Joby) used is a symbol that the author incorporated. In lines 40-41, Joby said “...I only got a drum, two sticks to beat it, and no shield.” This symbol is connected to the battle because he used them to keep the rhythm during the fight.
Symbolism shows up again later on in the book providing context/background information as they cross the Soldier’s Bridge. The symbolism that shows up here isn’t exactly the Soldier’s Bridge, but how people were identified based on if they had a car, what type of car they had, and what color they were. An example of this is the Soldier’s Bridge. “More than once when I had been in the wagon with Mama or Big Ma, we had to back off the bridge when a white family started across after we were already on it.” (pg 138)
Composers of literary works often immerse their readers into a world of fictitious narratives and personalities. Although the majority of authors desire this immersion, communicating their stories is not ordinarily their only objective. Many novelists covet the notion of allowing their readers to discover a deeper meaning within their passages. Most notably, authors achieve this through implementation of literary constructs such as symbolism and allegory. One instance in which the audience is cognizant to such literary constructs is through Bobbie Ann Mason 's short story, "Shiloh".
In “When the Emperor Was Divine” by Julie Otsuka, imagery, symbolism, and emotional content are used to show how much the narrator loves his father, what he is thinking about the situation, and the things that they’ve lost and how people should be treated with respect. Symbolism is see in the very beginning of the story. It is used to foreshadow what is to come for the family. There is talk about darkness in the first passage. His father’s shoes are black Oxfords.
Communication is needed in any relationship whether it be romantic or platonic. Without communication, a relationship will inevitably collapse. Written by Bobbie Ann Mason, “Shiloh” depicts the troubled marriage of Leroy and Norma Jean Moffitt, a couple whose relationship collapses due to a lack of communication. Leroy and Norma Jean are two contrasting characters who fail to resolve their differences through communication, creating tension between the two and leading to their ultimate divorce. Through the characterization of Leroy and Norma Jean and the depiction of a conflict between two spouses, Bobbie Ann Mason stresses that communication is key.
The forefathers of the United States built this country on the ideals of freedom and equality for all people. Unfortunately, the fight for equality and freedom did not end with the revolutionary war. The fight has continued throughout the decades. Many of these issues were fought in the courtroom. Auburn University created an online Alabama Encyclopedia, there, the following quote stated, “Scottsboro became an international cause celebre that dramatically encapsulated the American south troubled post reconstruction history of legal and extralegal racial violence, the social and political upheaval of the great depression, and the lingering cultural divide between the north and south.”
The blossoms represent the young people because the blossoms are at a new start trying to make new fruits and the young people are getting a start at life to grow up. Another way that the blossoms represent youth is that the blossoms are young and unmindful about what they are going to be as they grow and neither do these children in this war. The third reason that the blossoms represent youth is they aren’t old enough to become peaches and the children in this war are not old enough to become grown adults. The second symbol is the drum beat. The drum beat is the heartbeat of the army.
Symbolism Essay The novel To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, takes place in the 1930s, during the time of the Great Depression, a very devastating period for Southern families. With the novel taking place in Maycomb, Alabama, we get a brief perspective of our main character Scout, a very bold, and enthusiastic character that uses implicit biases throughout the novel which shows the standards of racism during the time frame. Jem, is Scout’s older brother, playing the role of the protector and symbol of guidance to Scouts. Atticus Finch, being Jem and Scout’s father, lawyer, and is the peace bringer of the novel, who is seeking to bring closure to Maycomb unjust properties and is defending the case of a black male named Tom Robinson.
I chose to write my Response Essay on the story "Sonny's Blues" written by James Baldwin. In Sonny's Blues, the storyteller recounts the tale of his association with his sibling, Sonny. Sonny is a performer not able to get away from the ghetto. Disheartened by his sibling's suffering , the storyteller connects with him, yet discovers that Sonny's hurt powers his music. The narrator is a teacher in Harlem that has changed his life and got out of the ghetto where he grew up.
Symbolism is used by many authors to convey a specific message that carries a deep meaning. In Harper lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, the primary symbol is the Mockingbird. There are numerous references to the mockingbird in the novel, which can be seen through some of the characters. The allusion of the mockingbird is used to represent the idea of innocence.
In James Baldwin's short story, Sonny’s Blues, the reader should understand and visualize the historical context in order to understand the world being presented. The reader has to comprehend the harsh life of a male African-American who struggles with his dreams and drug addiction sometime around early 1957. I will discuss Baldwin's writing style, the life/value of an african american's life during this time, and the relationship between Sonny and his brother. Baldwin’s short story illustrates the hardships a person faces while searching for themselves in a world full of people or obstacles that stand in their way. Some of these obstacles are self inflicted, present from the beginning of their existence or appear as though they are random.

The older brother who is also the narrator, gives us insight on the struggles in Harlem, and the life he had with his drug addicted younger brother, Sonny. As we follow the narrator, we later discover who Sonny really is. Published in the mid nineteen hundreds, the burdensome of living in Harlem in “Sonny’s Blues” reflects the life that James Baldwin endured.
