The story, “Reason,” examines the possibility of artificial intelligence becoming more logical than human beings, their creators, by ironically simulating the actions they do, ultimately leading to a world of unknown and uncontrollable fate. This is demonstrated in the scene where the two characters, Mike and Donovan, see the robot they created rebelling against them. As well as recruiting followers that he has convinced through his spoken words to also rebel against the humans: “I’m afraid… that my friends obey a higher one than you now.” The robots refuse to believe the humans were capable of creating them because they believe that they truly are the superior beings, and something inferior could not possibly make something superior. The eerie notion of this theory is the robot QT has begun to develop a higher language and reasoning than what anyone first intended. The intention of creating this machine was for purely one task, the convenience of the humans, they did not expect to be questioned for it because it did not seem possible. This is significant because it shows the irony of the robots not believing in basic human foundation, yet following it. The robot QT is the first to question the human authority, and eventually finds a higher one, the converter. QT begins to address the converter as the Master and himself as the Prophet as he speaks of the Master’s plans and history, “There is no Master but the Master and QT One is his prophet.” This trait here is what makes the story “Reason” incredibly different from other traditional Science Fiction stories. Not only are the humans depending on the technology they have created, but the technology itself has generated a dependence and adoration to a “higher” form of technology. Their “stiff-timbered voices” repeating the phrase of their Master begins to sound ritual, creating a tense and uncanny
