There are many different methods in literature to make writing more interesting, however, literary devices have been used for thousands of years and one of the most recognized pieces of work in history used literary devices to achieve this. In 1597, William Shakespeare published one of the most well known plays, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. The foolishness of two kids who hide their love for one another from their feuding families because it is strictly forbidden. The extent of this feud causes these kids to end their lives over each other. Shakespeare literary devices such as, allusions, soliloquies, and dramatic irony, that helped make the plot of this story more interesting. Lady Capulet shockingly shouted, “A lack of the day, she’s dead, she’s dead, she’s dead!” (4.5.24). This quote is a simple and straightforward example of dramatic irony because in the play Lady Capulet yelled this out when she found Juliets dead body, however, the audience knew she was only in a deep sleep that made her appear dead. Similarly, in an earlier act the nurse frightened Juliet by yelling that he is dead, not specifying that it was Tybalt that died and not Romeo like Juliet had thought (3.2.42-44). As opposed to Juliet, the audience knows that Romeo is not actually dead, while Juliet is filled with grief and sadness about his death. Dramatic irony intrigues the audience because they want to know what is next when the characters find out what actually happened, thus, Shakespeare´s usage of this literary
