Based on Richards Connell’s short story “The most dangerous game”, the literary devices along with other elements is what makes the story significant to its meaning. This effectively presents the progression of suspense as Connell describes the perspective of Rainsford's unfortunate affair with the island. Leading us to discover the unexpected environment and state of the protagonist. The use of foreshadowing conveys complex emotions for the reader by Rainsford discovery of a significant struggle in the jungle. As he remarks about the island’s atmosphere, causing concern in the further events. Rainsford’s viewpoint in a story allows the reader to connect with Rainsford about the unknown distress of the situation, rather than a third person perspective. For example, when Connell describes Rainsford's perspective, he states that “ The sensuous drowsiness of the night was on him." It's so dark," he thought, "that I could sleep without closing my eyes; the night would be my eyelids--" (69). Rainsford is an expert in hunting yet even he can’t see through the darkness. So the reader worries about the dangers of the night due to the previous conversation regarding the island's rumors. This can further the tension by Rainsford analysis about the hunting season. As Connell indicated in “The most Dangerous game” he confirmed that “But what kind of men, he wondered, are so forbidding a place? A twenty-two," he remarked. "That's odd. It must have been a fairly large animal too. The hunter had his nerve with him to tackle it with a light gun. It's clear that the brute put up a fight. I suppose the first three shots I heard was when the hunter flushed his quarry and wounded it. The last shot was when he trailed it here and finished it."(70) Reader’s can tell that he’s not alone on the island based on the pistol shots since he’s an expert hunter. This does form a question as to why there would be people on this island if it’s dangerous. Which can create an unsettling feeling to the reader about the people on this island having violent intentions against Rainsford. Rainsford talks about a type of gun used during the possible hunt before he was shipwrecked. A twenty two, which is a small gun that would have finished the creature off but instead, the hunter went out of his way by using brute force before killing the creature. Which makes the hunter a dangerous and intimidating figure. Even Rainsford knew how strange it was
