What better is there to do than be outside? Now picture this place as France in WWII, taken over by Nazi Germany. Going outside means certain death for you, as a Jew. Sara Blum, a 9 year old girl is very observant and interprets things differently than a regular 9 year old girl should. In the beginning to the end. The white bird is a very important symbol in the book. The white bird makes itself present throughout the book and symbolizes many different things. The white bird first appears in the story when Sara and her family are in the forest. Sara plays a game with her Papa, “Oh Papa! Can you make me fly? Of course, How high do you want to fly? As high as a bird soaring in the sky. Time to rise! Yes, in those days, I was as happy and carefree as a bird, but the world is changing.” (Palacio 15). As we can see R.J Palacio used the bird to symbolize being carefree and happy. She had an amazing life until everything changed in a tick of time. We also see another depiction of the white bird when Sara is in the barn hiding herself. She had been daydreaming and doodling in her sketchbook. “There was a small space between the boards that covered the window on the back wall. I would look out that tiny window for hours on end. From there I could see the edge of the woods, the fields , and the sky. It all reminded me of how beautiful the world still was. Even if, physically I couldn't go out into it anymore….
