Picture being a 15-year-old boy having to witness and bear the horrors of the Holocaust. Elie Wiesel did not have to imagine this atrocity because this was his reality. Elie Wiesel is the author of Night, a memoir depicting his experiences in the Holocaust. Through the memoir, he shared some of the most dehumanizing things a human being could endure and experience. In writing this telling memoir, Wiesel was able to incorporate many different literary devices which many authors use for artistic effect. This quote strongly emphasizes the theme. If they just hold onto faith, they will reach the day they will be free. Driving out what hinders faith will be the path to survival. Wiesel artfully crafted this memoir using anecdotes, but he also incorporated other literary devices to convey important themes to his readers. The second literary device used to introduce the theme is symbolism. Symbolism is used to give us a deeper meaning by portraying something as another. As a way to do this, Wiesel writes, “I too have become a different person. The student of Talmud, the child I was, had been consumed by the flames. All that was left was a shape that resembled me. My soul had been invaded–and devoured–by a black flame” (Wiesel 37). An unknown force enveloped his faith. Wiesel was starting to lose faith, and he could feel it.
