The Gift of the Magi and the Bert and Ernie video are similar and different in a variety of ways. One of them being that in Gift of the Magi, Della and Jim had both sold one of their items that was close for them, to get something for each other for Christmas, but in the Bert and Ernie video, Bert and Ernie had only traded their items with a storekeeper for something for each other. Another difference between the both of them is that in the Bert and Ernie video, they each got their items that they traded back at the end of the video as a Christmas Present from the storekeeper. But on the other hand, in the Gift on the Magi, Della and Jim didn't get their items back in the end that they sold. One of their similarities is that in both stories
How this shows sacrifice is Lucy accepts her fate to leave her family for the better even if she really doesn’t and Nora Sandigo shows sacrifice from being forced to do all that work and wasting her life. The second similarity is the dialogue shown in the two texts through papa saying “Your mother and I have decided …” Papá walked over and put his arm on Mamá’s shoulder. She sat frozen in place. “We’ve made plans for you to leave Cuba … tomorrow”. Nora indigos says “Every child is also a job”.
For example when Elie says “Meir, my little Meir! Don’t you recognize me… You’re killing your father…I have bread…for you too…for you too…” He collapsed….. The old man mumbled something, groaned, and died.” This shows how just for a piece of bread someone's son is willing to beat up his father for it and not care that it’s his father he is hurting.
The short story “The Scarlet Ibis” by, James Hurst, uses vivid imagery, predictive foreshadowing, and sharp point of view to convey the idea that pride isn’t the focus of life. To start, Hurst’s use of imagery shows how the cripple brother portrayed in the story is shown to be treated by his brother who is ashamed of him. The author uses imagery to show how the brother was born as a cripple and could not walk and wasn’t shown to be anything more than that. His brother, the point of view in the story, was ashamed of the brother and didn’t want to be known for having a crippled brother.
The sacrifices an individual makes for the sake of others really says something about them as a person. For example, in the story The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards, Caroline takes in Phoebe to be her child, putting her whole life on hold so Phoebe has a chance of having a happy life. To begin, after Phoebe’s birth, David Henry instructs Caroline to take Phoebe to an institution. When she arrives at this run down building, she can’t get herself to do it.
The Things They Carried, written by Tim O’Brien, illustrates the experiences of a man and his comrades throughout the war in Vietnam. Tim O’Brien actually served in the war, so he had a phenomenal background when it came to telling the true story about the war. In his novel, Tim O’Brien uses imagery to portray every necessary detail about the war and provide the reader with a true depiction of the war in Vietnam. O’Brien starts out the book by describing everything he and his comrades carry around with them during the war. Immediately once the book starts, so does his use of imagery.
Selfishness of a child is represented as a negativity in Brother’s life when he starts to cry after presenting a walking Doodle to his loved ones. “Doodle told them it was I who had taught him to walk, so everyone wanted to hug me, and I began to cry… They did not know that I did it for myself; that pride, whose slave I was, spoke to me louder than all of their voices; and that Doodle walked only because I was ashamed of having a crippled brother,” (347). At the time, Brother doesn’twant to be known as the boy with the crippled brother, so he does whatever he can to teach Doodle to walk. He cries due to the fact that his family’s glee is only present at the time due to him ashamed.
Symbolism In the gift of the magi, William Sydney porter frequently uses figurative language such as symbols. Symbols were such good signs about what the book was going to be about and what was going to happen it was clues token from the passage that the author wants the readers to know. The author used symbols such as in (porter page 140) he stated ‘the other was Della’s hair’ so the readers didn’t really know what at that point what she was going to do with her but when the author showed this symbols we right away knew what she was going to do with her hair because in the begging of the passage the readers knew that Della wanted to buy a Christmas present for her husband Jim. Also another reason why Della’s hair was a great symbol telling
Things They Carried Analysis draft In the short story “The Things They Carried,” Tim O’brien uses the literary element of symbolism to portray how people carry different items to represent certain things, and to represent the harsh realities of war and life. He also uses symbolism to show how people become attached to items, and how they take on deeper meanings in times of stress. The story takes place during the Vietnam war, and O’Brien talks about an army detail, and the different things that they carried. This story is a great example of the use of symbolism to represent many different things at once.
My winter song is “it 's beginning to look a los like Christmas” by Johana mahis. I close this song because my grandmother used to sing it all the time. This song has some interesting literary devices that you may of not of know. Like one of them is alliteration. In this song i have found 2 moré literary devices.
Edgar Allan Poe’s use of literary devices to show the how fear of the characters in his stories are both helpful and harmful to them. Poe shows how the fears and obsessions of the narrators in his tales either lead to their inevitable death, or their miraculous survival. Edgar Allan Poe uses many literary devices in his texts, such as symbols, ironies, and figurative language, to show the strange and distorted ways of the characters, and the repercussion of their fears and obsessions. In Poe’s stories, a literary device he uses frequently throughout his stories, are symbols.
(145). In many ways the witch is similar to the children’s mother in terms of her greediness and want to benefit herself. The mother deserts the children so she can no longer starve, and in doing this shows no grief, while the witch plans to eat the children and in preparing for this also fails to show angst. Temptation, in all three stories has a negative connotation attached to
The theme of blessings given by God is prevalent throughout the Hebrew Bible. In the quote given above, we can see the importance that blessings were to the people of the Bible. Blessings were given by God after an act of obedience, or being “chosen”. The idea of blessings can be seen throughout the Hebrew Bible books and chapters. The quote above is a prime example that God gave his blessing of power and rule on earth to the humans.
The promises he makes and everything that the shepherd offers are all temporary. The biotic gifts that are offered are also temporary. After a while, these gifts will become meaningless when “The flowers do fade, and wanton fields To wayward winter” (Raleigh 9-10). Raleigh uses the imagery of sight to show that some of the gifts that the shepherd offers will die.
In his short story, “Little Things,” Raymond Carver uses a mixture of imagery and symbolism to argue that the main characters of his story do not have their child’s best interests at heart and, therefore, do notgh deserve the child. Its similarity to the well-known Bible story of Solomon’s choice also helps Carver make his point. In the story, King Solomon is presented with a child and two women whom both claim that they are this child’s real mother. Solomon asks for a sword and says he will cut the child in half and give each woman an even portion of the child. One woman eagerly agrees, while the other woman cries out and begs the king to stop and just give the child to the other woman instead.
