Literary Elements Of Anthem By Ayn Rand

Ayn Rand is a talented author whose use of literary elements makes her novels all the more interesting. A significant example of this is when Rand articulates the use of the story Adam and Eve throughout the chapter by conveying explicit meanings and making connections to help the reader better understand the situation that the characters are facing as they enter into a new phase of their lives with more knowledge than they had before.
Adam and Eve is a tale from the bible depicting the events that occurred the first time humans were created and the first time they sinned. The story begins when the protagonists, Adam and Eve, make a mistake by taking a bite of the apple they were told not to as it would give them “the knowledge of good and evil,” (Fairchild). God did not want them to have this “knowledge,” to “keep his children innocent,” however, by breaking his laws, Adam and Eve ruined their perfect lives and ended up putting a curse over all of humanity (“A Summary and Analysis”). They go from a state of uniformity to one “of innocence and bliss,” contrasting what had happened in Adam and Eve (“Garden of Eden”). They realize that they “ have broken the law, but never doubted it, ”, yet they are slowly “learning to doubt,” as they experience the glorious feeling of freedom (Rand 66). Contrary to their prior beliefs, they cannot decipher between “what is good and what is evil, ” as their whole lives seem like lies (Rand 67). Unlike the ideas presented in Adam and Eve, where leaving their perfect home was seen as a negative outcome, in Anthem, Equality and Liberty leaving their homes led them to a place that can be comparable to the perfect Garden of
