Literary Techniques in a Short Story Authors use a variation of literary techniques to help convey a message to the reader. Some of these literary techniques include verisimilitude, flashback, and foreshadowing. Verisimilitude is when the author displays an appearance of reality in fiction. Another important literary technique is flashback; flashback is an interruption in the story where an act from the past is told. Lastly, foreshadowing is when hints or clues about what is soon to occur in the story are implied. Bradbury creates a very similar setting to Earth on Venus, but the only difference between the two planets is that on Venus in constantly rains. Although the sun could be gazed upon every seven years, for no more than an hour, this was the only main difference in the two climates. Just like on earth, when the sun was visible, it looked like a “It was the color of flaming bronze and it was very large. And the sky around it was a blazing blue tile color. The first occurrence of flashback in the story is when Mr. and Mrs. Hadley hear a scream in the distance of the grassland when they are in the nursery. This Mrs. Hadley’s scream, which was foreshadowing Mr. and Mrs. Hadley’s reaction to the lions and to their death. The next instance of foreshadowing was when Mr. Hadley reopened the nursery after locking it he heard another faint scream in the distance. Another incidence of foreshadowing that occurred in “The Veldt” was when Mrs. Hadley found her handkerchief that she had not put in the nursery on the ground of it. This was how the Hadley children were getting the lions familiar with the scent of Mrs. Hadley. In the nursery, Mr. Hadley had found an old wallet of his where the lions were previously standing.“The smell of hot grass was on it and the smell of a lion. There were drops of saliva on it, it had been chewed, and there were blood smears on both sides. This was how the Hadley children were introducing the scent of their father to the lions, this act foreshadowed Mr. Hadley’s death which was soon to come.
