Literary Techniques Used In The Earth On Turtle's Back

The story “Earth on Turtle’s back” expressed the beliefs the native Americans held which were reflected in their myths such as in this story. The native American’s believed that each living thing has a has a unique power and each thing affects the other. The techniques the author used such as using setting, plot, and characterization to bring out the story, gave meaning to the story and developed the theme. The theme of story is the respect for the animals. “The Earth on Turtle’s Back” demonstrates how the author uses different techniques; such as the use of setting, plot and introduction to characters helped aid in the development of the theme as a whole and showed the impact it had on the story.
The setting of the story was in the Skyland’s and in the deep water. I believe that the use of setting affected the story as a whole which showed where the events were taking place. An example of setting, on (pg. 20) it says “Before this earth existed, there was only water. It stretched as far as one could see, and in the water, there were birds and animals swimming around. Far above in the clouds, there was a Skyland. In that Skyland there was a great and beautiful tree” The authors choice of using setting provided background information to give readers an idea of how the living conditions were. For example, the climax, (pg. 22) “So the birds and animals decided that someone would have to bring up earth… The duck dove first, he swam down and down far beneath the surface, but could not reach the bottom…” The use of plot such as the climax was to show the most intense part of the story, where the most important part of the story was occurring.
