There are many different forms of literature out in the world. They come in forms of novels, short stories, articles, and poems. They help people by allowing them to be informed about certain topics and they even make people forget about their daily lives while they enter a totally different world. If literature never existed nobody would obtain new information, they wouldn’t escape reality, famous authors wouldn’t be famous, and publishers wouldn’t be publishing any great works of art. What makes literature, literature, is its wide use of imagery and symbolism.
Literature is an art form that allows readers to express their ideas and grasp numerous concepts. It allows readers to experience historical moments from the past in the present. Connie Willis does a fantastic job of expressing her thoughts about literature and how her experiences contributed to her view of literature. Connie Willis says that literature is a way for authors of the past to communicate with readers of today in the quote from the Passage, "That's what literature is. It's the people who went before us, tapping out messages from the past, from beyond the grave, trying to tell us about life and death!
The New York City neighborhood-bounded by the Harlem River, eventually became the biggest and one of the most important black communities in the United States. Harlem began as a farm village in Dutch, New Amsterdam. It remained an agricultural community until after the Civil War. In the 1920’s, the Harlem Renaissance brought together a talented group of artists, writers, and musicians that included Aaron Douglas, Ro-mare Bearden, Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, and Duke Ellington. Harlem, a district of New York City, situated to the north 96th street in NE Manhattan.
Duke Ellington was a jazz author, conductor, and entertainer amid the Harlem Renaissance. During the developmental Cotton Club years, he explored different avenues regarding and built up the style that would rapidly bring him overall achievement. Ellington would be among the first to concentrate on melodic shape and sythesis in jazz. Ellington composed more than 2000 pieces in his lifetime. The Duke Ellington Orchestra was the "house" symphony for various years at the Cotton Club.

My next and final topic that I chose is The Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance was rooted in the struggle for black civil rights. During and about right after WWI, in a phase of the Great Migration, some half a million African Americans moved from the rural South to the cities of the North. Most people moved in hopes of escaping the poverty and the oppression of Jim Crow Laws. They encountered racist hostility nearly as bitter as they experienced in the South.
The Harlem Renaissance was the rebirth of black arts and culture primarily in the north; it was where African Americans expressed themselves through music and other art forms to show that they were free and that they had the right to express their emotions as well as their thoughts. The Harlem Renaissance shaped America and the African American culture as it is today. They got to experience things they never experienced before. Although, this event in history is called the Harlem Renaissance it wasn’t only for Harlem.
The Harlem Renaissance-“New Negro Movement” The Harlem Renaissance during the 1920's and 1930's were best known as the "New Negro Movement. " It was a time when intellectual growth was at a peak for African Americans. The Harlem Renaissance was much more than history and culture. It sparked uniqueness and self-confidence in the daily life of many African Americans, an also redefined how people all over America, and the world, viewed African Americans.
The Harlem Renaissance was a black literary and art movement that began in Harlem, New York. Migrants from the South came to Harlem with new ideas and a new type of music called Jazz. Harlem welcomed many African Americans who were talented. Writers in the Harlem Renaissance had separated themselves from the isolated white writers which made up the “lost generation” The formation of a new African American cultural identity is what made the Harlem Renaissance and the Lost Generation unique in American culture because it influenced white literacy and it was a sense of freedom for African Americans.
The 1920s gave way to an explosion of media and entertainment amongst middle and upper class citizens. The Harlem Renaissance was a showcase of African American artistry and sophistication. Jazz music played a key role in this cultural awakening. The generation which participated in the Harlem Renaissance was the first of black people not being born into slavery. Though they were living in post slavery America, African Americans were still combating systemic oppression and demonizing stereotypes.

The Harlem Renaissance was a period of great cultural growth in the black community. It is accepted that it started in 1918 and lasted throughout the 1930s. Though named the ‘Harlem’ Renaissance, it was a country-wide phenomenon of pride and development among black Americans, the likes of which had never existed in such grand scale. Among the varying political actions and movements for equality, a surge of new art appeared: musical, visual, and even theatre.
