CHAPTER-2 LITERATURE REVIEW 2.1) Chronic wound and quality of life Wound healing, one of the normal biological process in the human body, achieved through four precisely and highly programmed phases known as hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation and remodeling. It is essential that all these four phases must occur in the proper sequence and time frame for a wound to heal successfully. Interruptions or prolongation in the process leads to delayed wound healing or a non-healing chronic wound (Guo S., et al., 2010). The presence of a chronic wound can disturb the every aspect of daily life and existence of affected persons. In case of elder persons, presence of wound can be disabling them and significantly interfere with their self care. They mostly depend on others and their days may revolve around waiting for dressing changes, protecting furniture, carpets and bed linen from soiling from exudate leakage, anxiety about attending any kind of social function because of the odour or possible leakage from a wound and so preferring to isolate themselves from the outside world. For others, having a wound restricts them to home. Whatever the circumstances, presence of chronic wound will have serious impact on their physical, psychological, social, financial position and their freedom to do what they want.
