Introduction (purpose of report) Lithocraft is a private company that provides a variety of printing services to its customers. In 2015 the company Lithocraft decided to change their premises or to make changes to their layout because it was not effective. They moved from their facility from South Melbourne to a new site. The South Melbourne production facility was spread over two sites which were divided by a small public road, which created many inefficiencies. Aspects of production were conducted on two different sites. That shows how the location choice affected the business. Processes needed would be the transportation. The output is the good being taken to its location. Current process flow and operations layout at Lithocraft Process flow is developing detailed specifications of the physical facilities as well as human skills and effort required to produce the desired volume. Lithocraft is a batch type of process. Batch is different types of products produced repeatedly in large volumes. Batch has been chosen because Lithocraft provides a variety of printing services to its customers which are produced repeatedly. Operations layout depends on the processes. Since there are two sites for Lithocraft the processes are distributed onto two different sites. The main stages of its production system are pre-press, print and bindery, warehousing and distribution. Pre-press involves getting an item ready for printing: creating the design with consideration to size, colour and shape for the client to check and sign off for final production. Printing transforms the design into a final product. Bindery includes trimming, gluing, folding and packaging related processes as required for the type of product. The product is then delivered to the client. Layout affects the arrangement of facilities and workstations used in the creation of a product. Facilities Layout are usually constructed to be permanent because making changes are usually very expensive. Important key aspects to be considered when deciding layout are size of goods, volume of production, staff needs, flexibility of use, type of service, security needs and health and safety requirements. The important areas of any Layout system is to make sure their is high level of productivity, the capacity to meet timelines and customer satisfaction.
