The immigration system is broken; immigrants are helplessly looking for safety, yet they are doomed from the start. My knowledge of the cruelty of our country and its neighboring nation was very slim before my eyes were opened to the truth told in this story. Little Bee and the inmates at the immigration detention center, in the novel Little Bee by Chris Cleave, have little chance at survival in England because of the immigration system setup. After reading this story, my views changed tremendously on immigration; I believe, as a country, we must provide a safe place for immigrants, not a place where hopes of a better life are broken. Growing up, I thought immigrants strived to live in our first world countries to steal our opportunities and resources, which is why our government turned them away. Little Bee opened my mind to the realization that immigrants are not problems; they are people. I believe they deserve to find refuge in a first world country, so they can live without constant fear. Many women, like Little Bee, are treated like animals by men. They are thrown around, raped, and even killed because these men strive to obtain power and money. Nkiruka, Little Bee’s older sister, is just one heart-wrenching example of what happens to women daily in these countries. “They raped my sister...I listened to my sister’s bones being broken one by one...when the men and the dogs were finished...the only parts of her that they threw into the sea were the parts that could not be eaten” (Cleave 130-132).
