Throughout a short story the use of literary devices are essential to an author, in order for the reader to interpret the story and understanding his style. In Philip Pullmans, “Little Red Riding Hood", and in Angela Carters, “The Company of Wolves”; within the short stories you will find the use of imagery, symbolism and suspense, and personification. Through the author’ use of theses literary devices the authors able to portray their own unique style. In Philip Pullmans, “Little Red Riding Hood", he uses symbolism in order to show that Little Red Riding Hood symbolizes innocence. “When Little Red Riding Hood had only been walking a few minutes, a wolf came up to her. She didn’t know what a wicked animal he was, so she wasn’t afraid of him” …show more content…

The author was able to achieve this through the use of diction and imagery throughout the short story. The author use of diction was present in beginning of the short story. “One beast and only one howls in the woods by night. The wolf is carnivore incarnate and he’s as cunning as he is ferocious, once he’s had a taste of flesh then nothing else will do.” Within this scene the author is able to allow the reader to understand and interpret that the wolf is a threat and inflicts fear into people. Another example would be, “At night, the eyes of wolves shine like candle flames, yellow reddish, but that is because the pupils of their eyes fatten on darkness and catch light from your lantern to flash it back to you- red for danger…” (Carter Pg. 212), within the previous quote within this scene the author uses imagery to allow the reader to see the danger and eerie nature of the wolf. Towards the end the author version of “Little Red Riding Hood” has the character build suspense in order to distract and amuse the wolf. “What big eyes you have. All the better to see you with. No trace at all of the old woman except for a tuft of white hair that had caught in the bark of an unburned log. When the girl saw that, she knew she was in danger of death.” (Carter pg. 231). Within the this short story Little Red Riding Hood is further is portrayed as a mature
