Live by night, by Dennis Lehane, is a gangster-type novel which was first published in 2012. By following the protagonist, Joe Coughlin, the book shows us a picture of people who live by night. Three parts of the novel tell us the journey of Joe from the flash of Jazz Age Boston to the sensual shimmer of Tampa Florida to the sizzling streets of Cuba. As the night fell, he decided to mark the world. Story began in the 1926, the Prohibition Era. After a bank robbery, Joe was put into the jail and accidentally became one of the confidents with the Italian mafia’s boss, Maso Pescatore. Wanting revenge against his hostile enemy Albert White, Joe volunteered his services to Pescatore and started to establish his rum empire in the Ybor City, Tampa. Successfully, Joe defected Albert White and set up the private rum producing and selling business in the west seacoast by working with Hispanic Cubans. Due to the unsuccess of the casino plan, Moas blamed him and tried to let his son take over Joe’s place, even wanted Albert White to run the rum business, which has been legalized, only because of Albert White is an Italian and Joe is an Irish American. Be honest, there are too many gangster fictions that tells a story about someone fell into darkness and finally control the darkness, just like Mike in the “Godfather”. In the begin of “Live by Night”, Joe once insisted that he is an outlaw but not gangster. In the mid of the book, even himself can’t believe that. Cruel and coldblooded, he changed and fell into the darkness. However, at the end of the novel, he put himself together and got out of ‘the night’. Author tried to tell readers that everyone who live by night is waiting for their chances to get redemption. Even the death could be a
