The live concert I attended was the Faculty Recital Prince George’s Community College Division of Humanities, English, and Social studies Presents The Music Of Ella Fitzgerald. The concert occurred on Wednesday, April 25, 2018, in the Marlboro Art Gallery at 1:00 pm. The concert consisted of vocal and instrumental music and was a Jazz chamber recital. The performers in the concert were vocalist Deirdre Jennings, Saxophone player Tim Powell, Pianist Greg Small, Drummer Nuc Vega, and Bass player Phil Ravita. Phil Ravita is a distinguished faculty member at Prince George’s Community College that performs in the Metropolitan areas near campus. The historical and cultural context of the work is fittingly complex, then renowned Broadway and popular music composer J.Fred Coots collaborated with lyricist Haven Gillespie to arrange the song. The dance-inspired modulations in the song reflect the swing jazz trend of the 1920s and 1930s made popular by Big Bands and Band leaders like Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway. In my opinion, the song appears to draw inspiration from another Swing Jazz ballad and Jazz Standard called Blue Moon that was written by popular music composer Richard Rodgers and his frequent collaborator, Broadway lyricist Lorenz Hart. Both songs reflect middle-class America’s renewed interest in leisure and entertainment after the great depression and before the Second World War. During this era, songs such as You Go To My Head would be performed by live bands at dance venues and clubs that youth in American cities would frequent. The piece You Go To My Head also employs the elements of music in addition to the style of swing Jazz. The elements of music are sound (pitch, dynamics, timbre) and Rhythm (Beat, Meter, Accent, Syncopation, and Tempo).
