The European enlightenment was one of the most important time periods in Europe. It occurred during the 17th and 18th century. During that time period, there were many philosophers who had many similarities and differences. Those similarities and differences are shown through the continuity and change of their ideas. While Thomas Hobbes wrote the Leviathan which was published in 1651, John Locke wrote the Second Treatise On Government in 1690. Thomas Hobbes and John Locke showed continuity and change to their thoughts on the role of government and social contract through their writings. Social Contract was one of the most important points that were mentioned by Hobbes and Locke. Hobbes started out by stating how humans are evil in their actions.
