When All Of Birmingham Went Silent It was a peaceful day in Birmingham, Alabama when the unthinkable happened. When people heard the blast, all of Birmingham went silent wondering “What was that noise?” The 16th street Baptist church had been bombed on September 15, 1963 at 10:22 am, shortly before Sunday services. This was the third bombing in 11 days. About 200 members were in the church at the time, but luckily only 23 were injured and 4 were killed.

Initially, the local council authorities were blamed for approving the construction of substandard high-rise buildings that threatened public safety (Scott p.1). On the contrary, it appears most of these assumptions were flawed, since additional revelations were exposed. For example, construction experts blamed the rapid spread of the fire on the of the 1967 archaic design standards. In addition, the failure was attributed to the external cladding that had been installed in the £10 m refurbishment.

While war is deeply ingrained in European history, World War I was unlike any other. Bitterness in Russia and France ultimately led them to aggression. Russia had been humiliated by the Japanese in the Russo-Japanese War.
The Royal Air Force Bomber Command would run attacks at night and the United States Army Air Force squad would run attacks on the Germans during the daytime. The RAF Bomber Commander felt that if they dispatched over 1,000 aircraft each night against the German objectives, it would destroy the industry of the city in hours and then the invasion of Europe would be unnecessary. In one night of bombing, over 1,000 aircraft used over 2,000 tons of bombs on Munich, destroying over 13,000 homes. In the daylight raids by the United States Army Air Force squads, had no protection of the fighter escorts like the Royal Air Force squads did.
