From the moment the readers are introduced to Crooks, he is described to have a crooked back, is a black man in the 1930s, and repeatedly faces abuse from the Boss, all of which hinder his ability to make meaningful connections with the others on the ranch. Even when offered the opportunity to withdraw from the cycle, he rejects it for fear of what would happen if he were to surrender to his marginalized position. Lennie, oblivious to the racism and ableism Crooks has grown accustomed to, attempts to communicate with Crooks but is shot down with, “[w]ell, I got a right to have a light. You go on get outta my room. I ain’t wanted in the bunkhouse, and you ain’t wanted in my room” (68).
Crooks is an african american stable buck who got kicked by horse and gave him a crooked back and that’s why he has a crooked back. In the story they only mention his name once or twice until chapter 3. Crooks is isolated in the story by him having the most items on the ranch, two of the items he has that makes him the oldest is a copy of the California civil code and ww2 right book. Crooks is isolated because he’s an african american and they didn't have much rights so he couldn’t stay in the bunkhouse cause of his ethnicity. Steinbeck uses Crooks in the story by showing that african americans were lonely and couldn’t socialize as much whites just because of their ethnicity.
Loneliness is contagious. In John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, the ranch that George and Lennie work on for most of the book have many lonely people. Each of the lonely people have their own personal reasons for their loneliness. Throughout the book, we discover lonely person after person who describe why they are so lonely. Loneliness plays a major role in the book revealing itself through Crook’s isolation, Curley’s wife’s despair, and Candy’s feelings.

In this quote Steinbeck hints that Crooks might be resentful of how the other men are treating him, and he retaliates with hostility towards them as well by insisting people keep away from him. A lot of people don't really understand how much everybody coming together and being there for each other affects one and other a lot of the times discrimination and selectivity are a big cause of loneliness . The feeling of loneliness can happen to anyone, even if that person seems to have the most perfect life, he or she can still feel isolated.
