Loneliness is something everyone experiences at some point in your life. People get treated poorly due to their differences that causes one to be lonely. Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, is about Lennie and George, two farm workers who migrated into California during the great depression who one day want to buy a farm of their own but do not have enough money at this time. There are three great characters who portray loneliness. Curley’s wife was lonely. She has no one to talk to and everytime she attempted to talk to someone the guys would just shut her down. After he had a farming accident on the ranch four years ago, people at the ranch started to treat him differently because of his one hand. Candy started to become lonely due to the way people were treating him. At the ranch the guys gave Candy the easy jobs by making him clean, and stopped treating him the same. A person eventually becomes lonely when treated poorly. Candy has no family, the only thing he had left was his dog, but the guys at the ranch decided to shoot Candy's dog because she smelled and was old. On Friday night Lennie and George were in the bunkhouse talking about ranch plans, but Candy joined in because he wanted to go with them. But as candy thought about the plan he remembered that his dog just died and made him feel more lonely. After candy observes the way the other guys on the ranch treat him, he thinks he will be getting kicked out of the bunkhouse soon and needs to find a way out before it happens, so he asks to join in on this plan. “But I'll be on our own place, and I'll be let to work on our own place'' (60). Candy is miserable because he wants to get away. He has no one left now that his dog is dead. He is talking about getting away but he says it miserably, because he knows he has no one and just wants to work, and be treated fairly. This made him an outcast and treated differently. Because Crooks is black his father never let him play with the other kids as a kid. As Crooks got older the guys at the ranch also treated Crooks poorly especially after he got kicked in the back by a horse. Crooks over time became lonely because of his crooked back and being black. Crooks works in the stable. He has a lot of his time to himself. Crooks does not let anyone in his room because he got kicked out of the bunkhouse to live in the barn by himself. One day Lennie saw the light from Crook's room in the barn so he decided to go to it. When Lennie first went there Crooks would not let him in but eventually Crooks lossend up and let Lennie in. Lennie Starts to talk about his dream with George and how they were gonna get a farm together. This peaks Crooks interest because Crooks just wants to get away from these guys treating him poorly. But when George comes in to get Lennie, George is a bit snippy with Crooks. Crooks then remembers that he gets treated differently and George is going to treat him badly so there is no point to go with them to a new farm. Crooks is just lonely, he wants someone there.
