Loneliness is the state of being alone and feeling sad about it. Only 17% report feeling lonely always or often, while 36% say they feel lonely sometimes. Finally, 10% of those with post-grad education don't have close friends. 14% report feeling lonely always or often, while 36% feel lonely sometimes. In Of Mice and Men the theme loneliness is shown very often in the characters Crooks, Curley’s Wife, and George. An individual's limitations can often propel someone to dream bigger than those without limitations. Sometimes the mark of a true friend is determined by how that friend handles difficult situations. Crooks is separated from the rest of the men because of his color. Even though Crooks has lived on the ranch for much longer than some of the other men his only companion is books. He shows this by this statement he says to Lennie. “You got George. You know he is coming back. S’pose you didn't have nobody. S’pose you couldn't go into the bunkhouse and play rummy ‘cause you was black.” (Steinbeck 72). He confesses his loneliness on the ranch. Everyone needs someone to talk to and to be with Crooks does not have this because Crooks is black he is treated differently and separated from everyone else the only time he is around the other men is when they use him for entertainment. For example Smitty, was upset at the fact that Crooks was able to join in with the Christmas festivities. Given that Crooks was black, and some of the men were prejudiced, Crooks was challenged to a fight. Because Crooks was injured and the men did not think the fight would be fair. So they made Smitty fight without his feet so as to balance out the fight. Crooks won the fight. Crooks was then sent back to his “room” which was a closet in the barn. Being lonely has been linked to worse physical and emotional health outcomes and poorer wellbeing. Plus, a lack of social support can directly affects our potential for experiencing happiness. While temporary loneliness can be ok, being kept away from other companions from animals to humans can be crucial on one's health causing depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, sleep problems and increased stress. A 2022 study found that elderly lonely people often have atrophy in parts of the brain including the thalamus, which processes emotions, and the hippocampus, a memory center. These changes, the authors suggested, could help explain links between loneliness and dementia. In the article “Loneliness is a $7B-a-year issue for the US” tells that “According to studies, social isolation, AKA loneliness, costs the US government nearly $7B each year” Some people believe that loneliness is better than having people. Studies show that it helps you develop a better understanding of who you are. With more research this seems to be the only benefit from loneliness. There are more negatives to being lonely than positives. Loneliness can cause high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, a weakened immune system, anxiety, depression, cognitive decline, Alzheimer's disease, and even death.
