The Port of Los Angeles alone is the biggest and most efficient center of importing and exporting goods in North America. When you combine that with the Port of Long Beach, which shares the same geographical location, there is no competition. The Port of LA and the Port of LB subsequently rank number 1 and 2 in number of containers handled per year in the United States. With this frequency of importing and exporting, the economy of Los Angeles County booms. Because China is the biggest exporter of goods to the ports for companies like Wal-Mart, Target, and Lowes, the economies of both of these companies prosper together. The ports indirectly create tens of billions of dollars of revenue every year for the surrounding Los Angeles County. California is the United States’ “gateway to the Pacific Rim” (Guerra, 2014).
