Lucas Ceverha Ms. Jordan Writing 150 2 December 2015 The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach keep the economies of Eastern Asia and North America stable. The Port of Los Angeles alone is the biggest and most efficient center of importing and exporting goods in North America. When you combine that with the Port of Long Beach, which shares the same geographical location, there is no competition. The Port of LA and the Port of LB subsequently rank number 1 and 2 in number of containers handled per year in the United States. With this frequency of importing and exporting, the economy of Los Angeles County booms. Because China is the biggest exporter of goods to the ports for companies like Wal-Mart, Target, and Lowes, the economies of both of these companies prosper together. The ports indirectly create tens of billions of dollars of revenue every year for the surrounding Los Angeles County. Trade between the two nations has grown from $4.8 billion to over $562 billion. The rapid increase in trade over the last decades is partly due to China’s entry into the World Trade Organization. California is the United States’ “gateway to the Pacific Rim” (Guerra, 2014). California will continue to prosper as long as China and the entire Asia-Pacific region continue to trade with the United States. No state benefits more because or its location. Specifically, Los Angeles County is perfectly positioned to take advantage of China’s surging economy. Los Angeles County is the International Trade Capitol of America. It is America’s “#1 Gateway to the Global Economy, #1 Gateway to Asia, #1 Gateway to China, and the biggest port” (Guerra, 2014).
