Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand is an astonishing story that starts off with Louie Zamperini, an Olympian who bravely fights in World War II, when his plane crashes into the ocean and miraculously survives with 2 other people. When all hope was lost, they spotted land and paddled towards it. As they went closer, it turned out to be a Japanese ship. They were taken to a POW (Prisoners of War) camp and suffered tremendously by the hand of a man nicknamed “The Bird” and only survived by the grace of God. When the war was over and Louie went home, he suffered Post Traumatic Stress and flashbacks.
The use of children in the Sierra Leone Civil War was widespread, with up to 10,000 children taking part in the conflict and up to eighty percent of RUF forces between the ages of seven and fourteen. Ishmael is one of these children. In his memoir, A Long Way Gone, Lieutenant Jabati and his men exploit several techniques to transform these frightened children into ruthless killing machines. Desire is the need for an object, a feeling or a person. One can have a desire for something that is essential for survival, such as water or food, but desire could be used to harm others or oneself. Through A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah, Ishmael’s perspective of desire was altered dramatically. These desires were changed from his surroundings or events that were taking place. In the book, Ishmael was easily manipulated by his desires.
In the book Deadline by Chris Crutcher, the main character Ben finds out he has a terminal disease. Ben then makes the decision not to tell anyone. Throughout the rest of the book Ben come to many realizations and encounter things that challenge his way of thinking. Ben and I have similar views and experiences that influences our lives, the ideas that we share similar beliefs are; People aren’t always as they seem, Relying on people to vent is a good thing, and determination will get you far in life are just some of the similar ideas we face. Ben has many different views throughout the book, one of the many views Ben expresses in the book is, that there is more to people than meets the eye.
The support of friends and family can help contribute to a character's ability to overcome difficulties. In The One Safe Place by Tania Unsworth, Devin was able to overcome his problems with the help of his friends and family. Devin's grandfather helps Devin overcome his difficulties throughout the story. At the beginning of the book, Devin was struggling to take care of the farm on his own when his grandfather died and remembered his grandfather once said: "' You'll go there someday too, Dev.' His grandfather had told him 'When you're ready to leave.'"
The protagonist of the book Between Shades of Gray, Lina, changed in many different ways by the time that the book was finished. She was convinced that she was worth less than an animal, she was forced by the Secret Soviets to work, and was given very little food, she found out the reason why she was forced into these work camps. These three things impacted Lina and changed her. She would never be the same thanks to these daunting moments in her life. Growing up, Lina lived a privileged life.
As outlined in chapter 10 of the course text, inequality in housing and wealth is a major problem. The United States is described to be the most unequal countries in the western hemisphere. But with the inequalities when it comes to wealth, the United States is one of the richest countries in the world. Wealth is the sum total of a person’s assets. “Two Kinds,” by Amy Tan, essentially revolves around the struggle of Jing Mei and her constant conflict with her mother. Throughout her life, she is forced into living a life that is not hers, but rather her mom’s vision of a perfect child; because her mother lost everything, which included her parents and kids, so her only hope was through Jing Mei. Jing Mei’s mom watches TV shows such as the Ed Sullivan Show, which gives her inspiration that her daughter should be like the people and actors. First her mom saw how on the television a three-year-old boy can name all the capitals of the states and foreign countries and would even pronounce it correctly. Her mom would quiz Jing Mei on capitals of certain places, only to discover that
