Statement of Purpose
I’ve learned in life that you are what you think you are and you can only accomplish what you think you can accomplish. Thus, my long term career goal is to become a tenured university professor of psychology. My interest in psychology began when I viewed a re-creation of the psychologists, Kenneth and Mamie Clarks’, doll experiment. The results of their experiment created a desire within me to help African Americans solve the issue of low self esteem and maladaptive behaviors resulting from the long term effects of slavery and racism. Subsequently, I plan to make my mark in this area by building on their research. Working in the financial service industry has allowed me to cultivate my abilities to focus, communicate, and inspire, while also functioning within a framework that requires the highest level of integrity. These skills have been beneficial in my pursuit of academic excellence and will undoubtedly remain a strong foundation in my pursuit of a Master of Arts in Psychology as well as my long term goal of obtaining a Ph.D. in Psychology and becoming a university professor. My experience as a series 7 licensed financial advisor provides me with a unique skill set that fits well with the skills needed for both a university professor and researcher. These skills include the ability to conduct research along with the ability to create and deliver presentations to both small and large groups of people. As a financial advisor, I spent over 60 hours a week researching, planning and presenting. Similarly, as a student, I have also invested an equal amount of time and focus in striving for academic excellence. Consequently, my dedication and perseverance is represented by my academic success as an undergraduate student where I am a member of Psi Chi International Honors Society in Psychology.
