In our schools today, one of the subjects that students struggle with is reading. This has a huge long term effect on our students because students can’t develop self-confidence and their mediation to learn. The National Reading Panel (NRP) came up with a way to help parents, teachers, and policymakers identify ideas to help reading become a better achievement. This Panel reviewed numerous of studies, and the research had to review the achievement of one or more skills in reading, examine the effectiveness, and needed to be regarded as high quality. Children that have phonemic awareness are more likely to have an easy time learning how to read and spell. Phonemic awareness is normally misunderstood. Most people thing that phonemic awareness is the same as phonics. “Phonemic awareness is the understanding that the sounds of spoken language work together to make words. Phonics is the understanding that there is a predictable relationship between phonemes and graphemes, the letters that represent those sounds in written language.” There is also another misunderstanding about phonemic awareness and phonological awareness. Phonemic awareness is actually a sub category of phonological awareness. Phoneme, grapheme, phonics, phonemic awareness, phonological awareness, syllable, onset, and rime are some terms that are used a lot in reading instruction. Scientific research also tells us about phonemic awareness instruction. It can be taught and learned and teachers use many activities to help kids learn phonemic awareness such as: Phonemic isolation, phoneme identity, phoneme categorization, phoneme blending, phoneme segmentation, phoneme deletion, phoneme addition, and phoneme substitution.
