Long-Term Goal (5-10 Years) Goals and Action Steps My long-term goal of accomplishing my personal vision is to open a private practice to help the Asian and Asian American population with mental health issues while continuing to train and understand more about mental health issues within this population. Sometimes my ethnicity has made some clients and patients prejudice my ethnicity creating a harder time to build rapport. In order to lessen this barrier, I disclose my ethnicity, so the client feels comfortable disclosing information to me. Another challenge that I face is working in the same city as I grow-up might that cause issues when working with clients. Sometimes I can be working with clients that I know or people that I have come across through my years of residency in the city. This can problems when building rapport because I would not be able to treat them as a client versus a friend. Additionally, I would experience countertransference from those that I have met previously before. In order to address these issues, I would need to become aware of my countertransference and set boundaries when speaking with such clients or patients. Awareness of my countertransference allows me to not cross professional boundaries that make clients feel uncomfortable. Because of the countertransference, I would need to gain an awareness of values of diverse groups coming from the same geographic origin. By fully understanding my clients, I would obtain an understanding of the client and their family system and engage the client (Kwok & Li, 2007). In order to fully understand the client, I would need to examine my own personal and cultural orientation. Understanding these values helps me work with clients within my own cultural groups and feel that this can be a hard process for them.
