Linda Sue Park's novel, A Long Walk to Water, is about Salva’s and Nyas survival in the present and past, about the aftermath and present time of the Second Civil Sudanese War. We see in the book Salvas smart choices, luck, and persistence help him through the story. Many of the mental choices and the decisions he makes in the book help him persevere through the challenges. We see him conserving his food as a part of him facing challenges in a way of making smart choices, him staying in groups when he tries to get to the camp is also a smart way to survive and have others to depend on, and finally him looking and observing in the camp looking for familiar faces so he can stay grouped up and depend on each other like when he depended on his uncle. He was pulled down underwater, being saved from being killed because the person who held him down got shot instead, he also was lucky enough to not be attacked by crocodiles. Salva’s luck and smart choices have helped him, but a main factor in his survival is Salva’s persistence. Through the desert, through the camp, and struggling when his uncle died, Salva's persistence made him stronger, better, and smarter. This driving factor helped Salva survive and thrive in the story and taught him to not give up and lose hope. We see many examples like this, one of them is after Salva's uncle died, his persistence still drove him to survive, making him go even longer and faster while walking across the desert.
