“Loneliness Can Emphasise The Importance Of A Relationship”

I have chosen to explore the theme “Loneliness can emphasises the importance of a relationship”. This is evident in the short story, The Geranium by Patrica Grace, the film, The Power of One directed by John G, Avildsen, the novel, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck and finally the film, Cast Away, directed by Robert Zemecks.

The short story, The Geranium, portrays the theme “Loneliness emphasises the importance of a relationship” though Marney and her relationship with the weekly newspaper. Majority of the students are of German descent and pick on Peekay as he is of English descent. Like the Geranium, Peekay is both verbally and physically abused. However he is abused for being the minority race. The theme “Loneliness can emphasise the importance of a relationship” is shown through Peekay when he becomes a social outcast and befriends a chicken. The example, “I named by chicken, Masibindi … she was my best and only friend” is intended to make us as feel sympathy for Peekay since he can’t have a more fulfilling relationship, like a one you have with another person. This emphasises the idea that Peekay has no one and from this we can assume the he would infact be lonely if it wasn’t for his chicken friend. Unfortunately when news of war against Germany and England breaks out, the boys are quick to act upon Peekay. They kill Masibindi and hang Peekay by his feet and fire a stone at him, claiming that, “All English will pay”. After the ordeal Peekay becomes incredibly saddened by the death of his, “only friend”. The quote, “The loneliness birds began to circle again” adds emphasis of her presence towards Peekay. The theme “Loneliness can emphasises the importance of a relationship” is seen when Candy becomes lonely and emotionally unstable after the death of his beloved pet. Unlike, The Power Of One, Candy’s dog is killed intentionally for old age. Leading to the death of the dog, Candy mentions, “ I had him so long … had him since he was a pup … he was the best damn sheep dog”. This give evidence that Candy is fond of his dog as has practically raised him. It also shows that Candy has formed a close bond with him, so the loss of him would obviously hit him hard. Candy struggles to come to terms with his pets fate and eventually sees through as he no other choice. However giving his dog away to death affects him emotionally. He becomes lost, as we read, “(he) stared at the ceiling .. (he) did not move nor answer … he continued to stare … he rolled slowly over and faced the wall and lay silent.” This reinforces the idea that Candy feels upset and lost, it helps us understand that Candy is emotionally depressed because of his dogs passing. Candy then says, “ I wisht somebody’d shoot me … (I) have no place to go”. This tells us that Candy doesn’t have much to live for now. It also reinforces the idea that Candy’s relationship with his dog was what gave him faith to live, now that he is without his the loyal companion the realisation of being alone makes Candy believe
