The story’s main setting is the state of Michigan in the United States, while it also takes place in different states, such as California, when the team goes on road games. The story revolves around Charles “Dick” Thornley, the varsity fullback. The fullback is a position in the backfield of the offense, along with the running back. The fullback’s main job is to block against defensive linemen or defensive backs that come in on a random blitz. A blitz is a hard rush or pressure on the quarterback, in the hopes of getting a sack or to rush the quarterback’s pass. The rush of the pass can lead to an interception by the defensive backs, which is what the Wolverines try to avoid the most in the story. In the backfield though, Michigan has another fullback on the team, Mike Flaherty. Flaherty and Thornley usually never play together, as both usually substitute each other between plays. Thornley also plays defensive back, usually a corner back or safety. Michigan’s Head Coach in the story is Steve Foster. Foster works hard with Michigan’s backfield coach, Labbie Labadie. Though it is never mentioned, I predict that this is merely a nickname they give him. …show more content…

The first sentence of the book helps to prove this, by giving the presenting the main character’s name, Dick Thornley, without using pronouns such as I and me. The main conflict of Dick is that his goal is to lead Michigan to the Rose Bowl, the championship game of College Football, held in California. He also wants to earn an All-American Title. These titles are usually given to the best players at each position. He wants the title of All-American Fullback, as he sees the names and pictures of Alumni All-Americans of Michigan everyday at their training facility.
