The meaning of Miles is “soldier”, and is possibly connected with the Slavic element name Minu which means “gracious”. Miles has a certain penchant of memorizing the famous last words of individuals. Miles develops a very significant liking of Alaska throughout the book. The novel is told in the perspective of Alaska. This causes the view of Alaska to change because Miles has a enormous liking of her, and multiple perceptions develop throughout the story. Miles does not fit with the meaning of his name. Miles is not a soldier, in terms of that he is not someone for being known to be tough, intimidating, or brave. This shows that Miles is not a person that can persevere through a rough time in his life very long. Ultimately he stays at Culver Creek, but thinks about the comfort of home and his old friends. It proves that Miles isn’t a soldier who would persevere through hardships. “I would never know her well enough to know her thoughts in those last minutes, would never know if she left us on purpose. But the not-knowing would not keep me from caring, and I would always love Alaska Young, my crooked neighbor, with all my crooked heart.” (Green 107). Miles starts to realize and finds the strength that the mystery of Alaska and her death don’t stop him from loving her. Miles loves Alaska, or a perception of her which changes throughout the novel. Miles loves a version of Alaska that might not even exist, or it’s that he loves parts of her, but may ultimately not even love her. This represents that Miles isn’t a soldier. It shows that he isn’t brave enough to realize that the person he loves, or the perception of that person, is dead and that she might not be the person he thought she was.
