In the book "Looking For Alaska" by John Green, the theme is death is a part of life. The author illustrates this theme by showing how Miles and Colonel learn to grieve and move on after Alaska's death. Another way the author illustrates this theme is by showing cigarettes as a symbol of death.

Miles, Colonel and Alaska all have learned to grieve and move on after a loved one's death. Miles and Colonel realized after a few months of Alaska being dead that they would truly never get her back. Miles had ever only experienced death once before in his family and it was his favorite grandma that died. He was so emotional after her death that he became obsessed with last words of famous people.Once Miles and Alaska become good friends, she tell him about how she never called 9-1-1 when her mother was dying. She then learned to move on with the fact that she could have saved her, but she can't bring her back anymore. Moving on when someone dies is natural because death is a part of life.
