We see Lacey transform into herself throughout the process of the film. In the early stages of her life, she was uncomfortable with her appearance. She recognized that her appearance was different than those around her starting at a young age when a boy asked to see her gums. From that point on, she struggled with how she looked. She noted how in her younger years, she didn’t like the color of her skin or the texture of her hair. Her discomfort didn’t dissolve during her teen years. While in high school she began to take notice that the other black students were looking at her differently. They had made passing comments about her race, which Lacey at the time hadn’t acknowledged. It would be her high school boyfriend who would question her background and the story of her Italian ancestry as the reason behind her physical appearance. Rather, Georgetown would classify her as a black woman and invite her to join the college’s black alliance. The black alliance group would allow for her to join a community that she felt more comfortable with as she explored her own racial identity. She mentioned that her hair was seen as beautiful in its natural style and her skin was considered light. Her insecurities had become qualities that she learned to accept and embrace. Eventually, she was able to confront her mother about the truth of her background. Once Lacey had begun to speak to family members, it seemed that she was able to fully embrace her multiple identities. The secrets were finally coming to the surface and being discussed in an honest manner. Lacey was then able to fully analyze her history in relation to her identities.
