The exquisite love story of Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy that stirs many emotions. Even though there are many contributing factors that resulted in their dreadful deaths, one particular character plays an extensive role. As Lord Capulet’s actions lead Romeo and Juliet’s destiny down a grim future. Despite the other characters’ actions, notably, Lord Capulet is to blame for the ghastly ending of Romeo and Juliet. After the death of Tybalt, on repulse, Lord Capulet agrees to the marriage between Paris and Juliet. At the time, he thought this was the only solution to her grievance. That night, Lady Capulet informs Juliet of her dad’s grand plan for her, “Well, well, thou hast a careful father, child. One who, to put thee from thy heaviness, hath sorted out a sudden day of joy that thou expect’st not, nor I looked not for” (3.5.107-110). Upon hearing this news, a distraught Juliet confronts her father with futile attempts to persuade him to end this engagement. Although this may be credible, even if Romeo did not kill Tybalt, eventually, Juliet will still be engaging to Paris. From the very beginning, Paris have relentlessly pursued Juliet but Lord Capulet told him to before their engagement is official he has to “but woo her, gentle Paris, get her heart. My will to her consent is but a part” (1.2.16-17). With Lord Capulet’s encouragement and approval, even if Tybalt was still alive, Juliet will one day be engaged to Paris.
