Leadership: Qualities of a Leader
In the book Lord of the Flies written by William Golding, a plane full of boys ages ranging from six to twelve were the only inhabitants on the island. Stranded on an island with no parental guidance, Ralph was elected leader by the other boys based on his father’s history in the Navy. However, Jack leader of the choir wanted to become the leader of them all and would do about anything to get that position. Leaders have certain skills to persuade people to think their way; regardless, if those skills are good or bad. Some qualities that a leader needs are setting goals, risk taking, and good communication.
The first leadership skill a leader needs to possess is the ability to set goals. If a leader is able to set goals that he or she would like to achieve, then it allows the team to realize what they need to do in order to achieve the goals. In the story, Lord of the Flies Ralph set a goal, and he expects the team to achieve it. The goal was to set a fire and get rescued. In the story, Ralph uses the conch to communicate to the other boys. “That’s what this shell’s called. I’ll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he’s speaking” (Golding, pg 33). By having this shell and allowing each person to have the ability to speak without interruption, makes it a good communication tool. The purpose of this skill is that the leader can talk and explain what he or she is trying to accomplish; therefore, leaving the group without questions.
