The beast in Lord of the flies by William Golding represents the savagery inside all humans that people are afraid to accept. Humans naturally want to believe that they are not animals and that they are superior. The beast drives the boy’s microsociety into chaos causing them to kill each other and form a social hierarchy. The beast was first introduced when one of the “little-uns” came screaming and crying to Ralph. The story of the beast scared many of the children and even some of the older kids.
