The Beast VS Fear Fear can consume a person's mind and it's no easier to do than with a child. Children fear what they can’t see and with no one there to ease their fears, it grows. This is seen in the novel “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding, where many boys are left stranded on an island alone with fear of a beast. Fear consumes them until they become the beast they fear. In the beginning, the boys are scared of the realization that they are stuck on the island. But the littluns are more scared than any one night; a littlun dreams of a beast in the forest which is seen as no threat at first. But as the days go by, the boys begin to fear the beast in the forest and believe it is real. Jack and his hunters track down a sow, but they don't just kill the poor sow. Jack begins to play with it, flicking his blood-soaked fingers at the other hunters as they laugh manically. Another one of the hunters Roger pulls out a spear and yells “Right up her ass!”(Golding 135). to an uproarious yelling. This is a new level of savagery we haven't seen from the boys. But Jack isn't done with the sow Jack and the Hunters decide to cut the sow's head off Jack says “This head is for the beast. Its a gift.”(Golding 137). The boys still fear the beast, believing that this gruesome act on the sow will please the beast so much it will take its offering as peace. Fear of the beast is still palpable on the island, and it only gets worse at night with the boy's minds running wild. Ralph and Piggy started to distance themselves from Jack, but they were hungry for meat. So they make their way to Jack and they hear what sounds like a party, uncommon in a place so void of true happiness.
