For the Lord of the Flies unit, my project was creating a travel brochure that explains the importance of each main location on the island. The island overall contributes to the development of the story, because of how the boys were stranded. The boys had to figure out ways to survive by gathering food, water, and shelter. This leads to the island being isolated, which forces the boys to create a civilization of their own. The brochure will mention four main locations within the island that contains descriptions of the specific place, with a map of the island shown when you unfold the brochure on the back. The outside sections illustrates a palm tree with symbols and themes. These were considered artifacts that are from the island. The symbols mentioned, such as The Spear, Glasses, Conch, and the pig on a stick. For example, the conch was , “Used to call the boys together, and since it commanded a response from all the boys, the conch represented order, parliament, and authority”(Lederer 577). The shell governs the boys’ meetings every time someone holds it, which shows the power that they gain from it. Other symbols, like the spear and glasses, represents the power contained in their society. According to the novel, it states, “His specs-use them as burning glasses!”(Golding 40). Piggy’s Glasses become one of the boys’ special advancement, since they are able to use them in order to light the signal fire. The spear also shows war and savagery, since this tool is used for fighting. The spear also goes with how the boys killed a pig on a stick, because of doing the act of killing a pig with a spear. This shows fear of violence between the boys and their civilization.
