What does the word community mean to you? Does it mean simply talking to someone, being in the same environment as others, having one or more meaningful interactions with an individual? To me communication means a lot more than that. In William Golding’s book “The Lord of the Flies'' there are many excellent examples of good and bad communication in the book. In general in the book Ralph and Jack are portrayed to disagree with each other and they seem to have bad communication. Being able to communicate with others is important because communication is key to many things: keeping good relationships throughout your life; you can communicate through interest, action & location.

Starting in the beginning of the book you meet Piggy and Ralph and they have a bond like best friends and throughout the book they communicate through difficult situations. Especially in chapter 1 of “Lord of the Flies" community is quickly demonstrated. (Golding pg 22) In the beginning of chapter 1, the boys try to establish some sort of system on the island to make it effective ; all the boys meet together and they vote for who would be the best leader. After some time of talking and deliberating, Ralph was chosen to become the leader of the boys! In order for them to vote for Ralph they had to come together as a community. For instance a big part of the book that uses communication as a big part would be the conch; the conch is very significant in the book because boys use the conch to communicate their feelings as well as discuss important topics. Communication was a crucial part of “The Lord of the Flies” . Without communication I think that book wouldn't have been able to evolve the way that it did. Even aside from just “The Lord of the Flies' ' communication is important in our day-to-day life. Despite the fact that there's not many sources claiming that communication is bad. You can still argue what time of communication is strongest in “The Lord of the Flies”. At a glance you might say that it is a place. Place type of communication is when people are brought together by geographic boundaries. Interest communication is when people who share the same interest or are passionate about similar topics. Last but not least, action communication is when a group or groups of people are trying to bring change about something important to them. In “The Lord of the Flies' ', Place communication seems to be the main source of communication because the boys didn't have a choice but to be on the Island and one thing that bonded them was finding a way to get back home. If they weren't stuck on the Island then I don't think they would have communicated as much as they did. They would've had less problems if they didn't communicate nevertheless they were going to end up having conflict anyway, due to the limitations of being stuck on the island and their need to survive
