Symbolism usually represents a deeper meaning on something. The novel that I’ll be speaking about is Lord of the Flies by William Golding, there are a lot of significant symbols in the novel and I’ll be discussing three significant symbols in the novel. The conch was the most significant symbol in the novel because it was a symbol of power and civilization. Whenever somebody was speaking while holding the conch everybody stopped and listened.Firstly, the conch was mainly used to keep the boys on the island in check and organized. We saw this repeatedly throughout as Ralph used it to gather the boys for meetings. In the beginning, the conch was used to call meetings “NO we have a meeting” (Golding page 16).To conclude, the conch shell represents the rise and the fall of democracy, Ralph's weapon was the conch he used to keep everybody in order and it shows without the conch, there would’ve been chaos.Secondly, the conch was powerful enough to keep the boys respectful and civilized. …show more content…

Ralph was the chief which gave him more power, it also gave Piggy a chance to speak, and if it wasn’t for the conch nobody would listen to him. When Ralph’s tribe was ambushed, Piggy was surprised that they didn’t take the conch. Jack wasn’t a average boy, he was a savage.
