When you are born, you are born being innately good. Golding shows the boys being innately good throughout the book by the conch and the rescue fire symbolizing goodness. Lord of the Flies by William Golding is a book about young boys that get stranded on an island all by themselves. The boys come across many challenges along the journey to try to find a rescue plan. The use of the conch and the rescue fire symbolize goodness in humans because they were both used in ways to try and benefit the boys. “They became a circle of boys round a campfire and even Piggy and Ralph were half-drawn in'' (Golding 56).The boys had no guidance on how to survive on the island, and had to think of survival skills. The boys made a campfire because they had to think of a plan for food, they found meat and roasted it. They are afraid of something out at night: “There aren't any beasts to be afraid of on this island. He looked along the row of whispering littluns” (Golding 63). This shows that the boys are innately good because they are comforting the littluns. The Littluns are afraid there is a beast and Ralph makes them feel safe and protected. The boys are nervous when hunting for the unexpected, he explained the island is safe for them. "You couldn't have a beastie, a snake-thing, on an island this size," Ralph explained kindly. "You only get them in big countries, like Africa, or India" (Golding 27). Ralph makes them all feel protected in times they are fearful.
