In the heat of World War II a plane full of schoolboys crash-landed on a deserted island, two boys out of the rest start to develop a rivalry with each other, due to differences in ideals and priorities. As some boys descended into madness one boy, Ralph, rose above them to attempt to lead the boys out of the situation, and back home. Similar to how Gandhi led India out of Britain's oppression in a nonviolent way to bring the country together. Ralph in Lord of The Flies shares many leadership qualities with Gandhi, such as determination intelligence, and how they handle adversity. He was coughing and smearing the paint about his eyes with the back of his hand as he tried to see through the increasing smoke. Ralph launched himself like a cat; stabbed, snarling, with the spear, and the savage doubled up. There was a shout from beyond the thicket and then Ralph was running with the swiftness of fear through the undergrowth”(Golding 280PDF) This shows how Ralph was determined to escape Jack’s tribe, he needed to for the memory of Piggy, and Simon and to escape the island. Ralph could have surrendered and given up but instead, he fought and ran to escape. Ralph was determined to keep the two groups together because he knew that if they didn’t stick together bad things would happen, which they did. He knew that they needed all of the hunters to keep the fire going or else it would be a lost cause and the boys would be doomed, yet he was determined to try and keep everything together for as long as possible. Another leader who was determined to accomplish the task at hand was Gandhi during his fight to end Britain’s oppression of India. Ralph’s intelligence is shown when he was prioritizing shelter and escape over hunting for pigs. This was when Ralph and Jack’s relationship starts to worsen as, this is the first interaction in this manner. “I was talking about smoke! Don’t you want to be rescued? All you can talk about is pig, pig, pig!” “But we want meat!” “And I work all day with nothing but Simon and you come back and don’t even notice the hut”(Golding 75PDF )This shows Ralph’s intelligence and common sense by him prioritizing shelter and rescue over hunting shows how he thinks for the group and wants to make it better for the boys, while Jack thinks for himself and to fufill his desires. Another way it shows his intelligence is how he logically approaches his challenges, and comes up with solutions to many problems, as when he and jack were arguing he was constantly trying to come up with a logical compromise to try and better the group.
