William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, is a classic novel about a group of schoolboys stuck on an island where fear and savagery consumes them. From the beginning of the book to the last page fear has a prominent role in the novel. Fear in the book manifests itself with many thoughts including what the littluns refer to as the beast, and the fear of not getting home. Fear leads some of the boys to make regrettable decision and it also leads Jack to a position of power. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding fear dominates the island that the boys are stranded on and this fear leads the boys to positions of power and influences some of the boys to make regrettable decisions.
For starters, fear is what drove the existence of the beast thus confirming that fear is the fundamental cause of conflict in Lord of the Flies. Fear is what created the beast because fear gave the boys a false illusion of the island being a treacherous place. For instance, when the boy with the mulberry mark said he saw the ‘Beastie’(Golding 34), in reality, it was vines hanging from the trees. The kids are in a new environment where everything is tainted by fear.
In the rough times of today’s society, fear seems to be an emotion that all humans can relate to. In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding he uses the topic of to draw to readers in and give them the ability to empathize with the characters. Also he portrays with explanations of the children’s fear, it brings out the inner savagery and killing of the kids can take over eventually leading them to cause a lot of chaos and destruction. While on the island, the amount of fear the boys show is the reason for a lot of conflicts to happen. The groups fear of the beast, the fear they will not get rescued off the island, and lastly the way Jack manipulates the other kids into joining him to kill.
Fear has the ability to manipulate people into believing there is danger when there is not, causing them to make rash decisions. These decisions can result in a disobedience to one’s cultural beliefs, as seen in Lord of the Flies and Beowulf. Even though the characters from Lord of the Flies and Beowulf come from cultures built around nobility and loyalty, fear tears them apart from the society they had worked hard to achieve. Although the boys from Lord of the Flies tried to keep their culture’s morals, the fear of the unknown caused the children to betray their Culture.
In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, fear is the cause of why the boys do certain things. They do things that they would never have done if they were not scared, because they do not want to be scared. The negative actions or behaviors of the boys on the island
Complete terror has come over the island. Some of the littluns say they have seen a beast. I think they are just scared after the crash. It all started with samneric and there craze little minds claiming a beast came falling from the sky. There is obviously no beast or monster on this island, we searched the whole island, Jack, Ralph and i, we saw no traces of a beast, monster, or anything of that nature.
What causes savagery behavior ? Biology can make people do bad things. It can cause savage and immoral behavior. Just like in the novel The Lord of the Flies. In the book, The Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, he writes about character who are kids whose plane has crashed on an island.
In 1933, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, president of the United States, said that “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” Fear overwhelms the body. It’s what gives us motivation to survive. In Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, fear plays a huge part in how the boys react to being stranded on the island. Every action is controlled by fear.
Fear is a tool that has been effectively used by many past dictators. In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, the beast is universally feared by the boys. Jack uses the idea of the beast to skillfully manipulate the other boys in order to establish order. Jack convinces the others to follow him because they believe that Jack and his hunters will defeat the beast and protect the rest of the group. Jack eventually usurps Ralph as chief because he convinces the boys’ that Ralph is a coward and that he wouldn’t protect them from the beast.
Fear is an unpleasant caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain or a threat.(Mariams Webster). Fear is a thing we all hold inside of us, we are all scared of something or someone it 's just human nature. In Lord of the Flies, William Golding uses a unique way of showing how fear affects human behavior, he used the boys on the island to show how fear affects the behavior of humans and how the boy 's manner and mentality changed over time. From when the boys first came on the island they are actions were normal then later on as the boys started gaining the fear of the beast they started doing abnormal actions they took certain steps because of the fear in them that had been planted by the beast in this case. One of the main reasons fear is spread through the boys is the beast, though we find out the beast is nothing but their imagination.
Fear in the eyes of the Reader Beast. A vicious, violent figure that may frighten or cause fear towards anyone. A beast can be as harmless as a fly or as savage as a wolf or a shark. Fear can cause a person to hallucinate and think that something may possibly be after them. In the book Lord of the Flies, William Golding was trying to interpret the meaning of fear in his eyes.
While evil impulses may lurk in every human mind, the intensity of these impulses-and the ability to control them-appear to vary from individual to individual. Through the different characters, the novel presents a continuum of fear, ranging from Jack and Roger, who are eager to engage in violence aggression and power through fear, to Ralph and Simon, who struggle to contain their humanity over there instincts of fear and aggression. The ambiguous and deeply ironic conclusion of Lord of the Flies, however, calls into question society's role in shaping human evil. The naval officer, who repeats Jack's rhetoric of nationalism and militarism, is engaged in a bloody war that is responsible for the boys' aircraft crash on the island and that is mirrored by the civil war among the survivors. In this sense, much of the fear on the island is a result not of the boys' distance from society, but of their internalization of the norms and ideals of that society-norms and ideals that justify and even thrive on power.
The Power Of Fear in “Lord of the Flies”: No Greater Illusion Than Fear Fear is intangible yet has perceptible effects. It plays a significant role in human behaviour. Each individual reacts to fear differently, some overcome it, while others give in to it. In William Golding’s “Lord of the Flies” the theme of fear is discussed and it becomes clear that fear has the power to take over not only one’s mind but also control one’s actions.
“His mind was crowded with memories; memories of the knowledge that had come to them when they closed in on the struggling pig, the knowledge that they had outwitted a living thing, imposed their will upon it, taken away its life like a long, satisfying drink.” Ralph and the boys crash-landed from a plane and woke up on an island and realized that they stuck with no way of getting out. Their only hope was to signal someone. As time marched on, almost all of the boys had become so savage-like that the few who remained with morals were in a fight for survival.
Fear is what you make of it because nothing is inherently scary it is what you take from the object or experience that makes it scary and fills your head with fear. This can have an effect on society and how people and their respective governments react to types of issues and problems. This leads to in extreme cases war and mass murder of a society that is being exploited as a scapegoat. In the book Lord of the Flies the author William Golding suggest the impact fear has on human nature and how it disrupts order and disorder in a society.
