Often people have a comparable set of morals to the individuals they are encompassed by. Frequently, acquaintances and harmonious societies are established through a strong base made up of similarities. When a shared moral structure is not present amongst two individuals, the personalities will negatively collide causing conflict. A society has an essential requisite, which is a shared set of morals, in order to be sustainable and thriving. While a shared moral framework provides a flourishing and amicable society when present, it can also cause a prospering society to disintegrate and disperse when absent and can administer savage and greedy personalities in specific individuals that do not possess the same morals.

For example, when Jack began to disagree with Ralph’s morals, he stated, “I’m going off by myself. He can catch his own pigs. Anyone who wants to hunt when I do can come.” (Golding, 140) This quote displays the hatred Jack has towards the society Ralph desires to build, a society with rules and law. Jack wishes that he can hunt throughout the day and live an unrestrained lifestyle on the island, whereas Ralph has aspirations to build a sustainable society with regulation and morality. A strong moral principle is the crucial component in creating a maintainable society and when it is not present that society will deteriorate. Another example of this occurs when Roger releases the stone that hits Piggy. The author says, “The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee; the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist” (Golding, 200) The civilized community many of the boys dreamed about is destroyed due to Jack and Roger not agreeing with Piggy’s moral framework. The conch symbolised a means of free speech resulting in many of the boys feeling audible. When the conch is destroyed, all anticipations of law and within a peaceful society are destroyed. The divide between two individuals with distinct and separate moral codes is the aspect that obliterates a flourishing
