Nurture in Lord of the Flies While being trapped on an abandoned island, the heat and hunger sets in, and as time goes by, people show their true selves to stay alive. The longer the young boys remain on the abandoned island, the less ordinary and civilized they become. At the start of the novel, the boys stick together in one tribe, this soon comes to an end. In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, the underlying theme of nurture is exposed throughout the novel. The new hunter characteristic quickly alters and adjusts each member's personality, even including Ralph and Piggy. The tribe takes on hunting strictly for survival, but as the story continues a noticeable spin on purpose takes place. Golding emphasizes exactly how much the environment affects each character's identity. In chapter 9, William Golding refers to the killing of Simon: “The beast was on its knees in the center, its arms folded over its face. It was crying out against the abominable noise, something about a body on the hill” (Golding 152). This excerpt identifies the willful murder of “the beast” and further exemplifies how brainwashed and invested in hunting the tribe became. The tribe's infatuation for the game of hunting was taken so far out of line, they believed they were killing an unrealistic beast. The observation from the start of the characters journey to the deepest points show drastic change in their character, this further proving the effect on an environment on an individual. Lindberg articulates, “Your environment might raise or lower your stress levels, for instance. This can change your mental wellness overall, either serving to protect your psychological health or opening the door for mental illness to set in.” This evidence provides an explanation for the insanity the tribe is consumed with, as well as a strong reasoning.
